it hurts to be alive
I think there are two categories you can sort people into. Those who fear life, and those who don't know enough to fear it.
To appreciate what it can do to you. That's why some people decide not to have children, maybe, because they think they shouldn't bring a new being suffering.
That's why my father didn't want to have children. However my mother, being of the latter category, wanted six.
In some way, I think it's selfish to want to have children so that they can entertain you, occupy your time, fulfill your need to nurture something, and support you when you're old. But people are selfish by nature, as postulated by Adam Smith. Which is why the world's population is growing in a world where everyone must die.
