holiday!

Best party in a while. Or at least, one that I enjoyed. :) It was fun talking to people I don't normally talk to everyday, cause of different timetables and classes and things.

And the cake was awesome, if melted.

And even though we had to wait an hour (?? Probably even longer) for a taxi, it was fun talking. And it allowed us to sing her the happy birthday song in the cab!

Lastly, I got to wear my boots. :) Thanks to David for being a good host, and happy twenty-first!

I guess people will want to know how the Taiwan trip went. The first 5 days were spent traversing the whole of Taiwan (really the whole border) with a tour group of amusingly strange people. There was the superstitious friendly lian who sat in front of me, and her husband seemed a little bullied even if happily bullied. Cause he paid for everything she bought. :)

There was the cigarette-toting old lady who cut queues for a living. And the 4 malaysian women who complained about the tour sending us to places to con us of money, when they bought stuff at almost every stop. When we went to Taipei 101, she asked the tour guide if they sold Rolex stuff there. She pronounced Rolex as Ro-lag. :P

There was this really gross guy who kept coughing like he was about to spit! It was really gross. He was about 2 rows behind me and whenever I tried to sleep on the bus I'd hear him. Eww. :? But my mother said it might be a medical problem and not to be too harsh on him (because my younger sister and I amused ourselves with describing the people).

The hot springs, although not very hot, was fun. We ate the soft-boiled egg from the shell with a straw.

My mother had a lot of duh moments too. :P She is like that. My father walked in a big round around the hotel to explore the area around it. It was a non-convoluted round. A simple round, round the block. He arrived back at the front entrance of the hotel, and said, "We're back."

Mother: "Where is it?" --> could not locate position of hotel.

Etc repeat x1000. :P

We extended our time there for 3 days after the tour, in which we did frantic shopping and eating.

Oh, there was that day we were in the face shop. And my mother bought the astronomical amount of products, which she claimed were for us as well, and that some were dutiful gifts to family members. Pfft. The salesgirl, who was quite good at her job, instructed her to apply some conditioner thing on her "fa2 wei3". Told her that twice. My mother happily proceeded to put it on the roots of her hair and complained that it was too oily! Then the salesgirl scolded her. :P

There's a really nice mochi shop in Ximending! The mochi is grilled over a fire, then you put sauce over it. Black sesame sauce was the best. Because our hotel was really close to Ximending, we walked there often.

My mother was really sad that there was no Tai Yang Tang in Taipei, cause the Tai Yang Bing from there is supposedly the best. But she eventually found some packaged ones. :)

One day when we were finding dinner, my father saw this shop with a long queue. It sold Japanese food - the usual - sashimi, sushi, udon, large prawn salad, stuff. He wanted to go in but that night my brother was being grumpy about lack of food so we went for a place with a shorter queue. Later, after eating, we passed the same shop again and my father stared into the window like an obsessed gamer.

He made us go back, and the sashimi was cut in really large pieces at cheap prices. So he made us go back a second time, and they (the AP) kept dreaming about it.

Some interesting features in this holiday are that

1. My older sister was not there, which had a relaxing effect on everyone. Because my older sister is really really picky about not wanting to eat chinese food (rice). And she sulks when she has to eat stuff she doesn't like. She remembers places by the food she ate there (try Tiffy's which is near California Disneyland, she recognised it after like 8 years?). In that way she's like my mother and younger sister. But just more choosy.

And she doesn't like shopping in crowded places where you have to bargain. She goes for really high-end branded stuff, which is how she ends up in debt to my parents many times.

2. My younger brother started to grow a spine. I mean it! He has always been the least scolded of all of us, being the youngest. He just avoids punishment. Threaten him and he'll do his work. But it was really bad cause he didn't want to take pictures with us, walked ahead of us in those scenic places the tour brought us to, and sulked when we started shopping. Moreover. He is a hygiene freak. If he sees one spot on his bowl (which happens often enough in Taiwan), he points it out to my mother and wants to exchange bowls. Not thinking that it'll be his family members who have to exchange bowls with his flawed one.

He doesn't kill or touch insects or "unspeakable" things like that.

We brought three cameras, so I took a couple of shots of him standing alone, away from us. Just his profile and the scenery. I named the series "Lionel and the Wilderness". My father started taking such shots.

We have a pair of walkie-talkies. I used them once in Genting and the guy at one ride, who had a walkie-talkie himself, started pretending to talk into it. Anyway.

When we were in some temple, my father used that to communicate to us that he would take a "Lionel and the Wilderness" shot. :P So we helped him. And later, my younger sister and I were using the walkie-talkies to say to each other in pretend-deep voices: "Hi, my name is Lionel. My middle name is Wilderness".

He suddenly got annoyed and knocked the walkie-talkie out of my hand. So I scolded him.

Anyway, he's growing up!
